In order to register your Common Access Card (CAC) to your AKO account, you must:

  • Be at a computer where you can put your CAC in the CAC reader, and the CAC software is correctly installed.
  • Know your CAC pin.
  • Be able to login to your AKO account with your username/password.

The following these step by step instructions will guide you through registering your CAC with your AKO/DKO account:

  1. Log into your AKO account with your username and password (do not press the CAC login button). If you need a password for your AKO/DKO account, please go to the Reset Password page for instructions on how to reset your password.
  2. Once logged into your account, put your CAC into the reader.
  3. Make your certificates available to Windows, which can be done in the CAC software on your computer. There are 2 main types of CAC software. Please select the following instructions that apply to the CAC software on your computer:

ActivClient Software

  • Go to the Windows Start menu.
  • Click on ‘Programs’.
  • Locate the ‘ActivIdentity’ Folder.
  • Highlight ‘Active Client’, and then select ‘User Console’.
    A window will pop up. Go to the ‘Tools’ pull down menu, to ‘Advanced’, and select ‘Make Certificates Available to Windows’.
  • A screen should appear, informing you your certificates have been made available to Windows. Click on the ‘OK’ button, and close out of the ActivClient window.
  • Move to Step 4 and continue with CAC registration.

Active Gold Software

  • Go to the Windows Start menu.
  • Click on ‘Programs’.
  • Locate the ‘Active Card Gold Folder’.
  • Select ‘Active Card Gold Utilities’.
  • Select ‘Tools’, and highlight ‘Register Certificates’.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to do the task – click on the ‘YES’ button.
  • You should receive a message that says your certificate has been successfully installed. Click on the ‘OK’ button.
  • Close out of the ActivCard Utilities window.
  • Move to Step 4 and continue with CAC registration.
  1. Now you are ready to continue with registering your CAC. Go to the ‘My Account’ drop down menu in your AKO account. Click on ‘Login Options’, then click on ‘CAC-Cert Registration’.
  2. If you see a screen which says: ‘Current Registered Information’, click on the ‘Clear Registered Information’ button.
    If the screen says you’re not currently registered, click the ‘Register’ button.
  3. At this point, it may ask you to do any or all of the following tasks:
  • If it asks you to choose a digital certificate, choose the certificate with your name.
  • If it asks for your Active Client Pin, enter your pin associated with your CAC – this is the number issued to you at the CAC issuing office when you received your CAC.
  • If it asks for your AKO password, enter your most recent password you were issued.
  1. You should at this point see a screen which indicates you’ve registered your CAC.

Changing Your Password for 150 Days

If you log out of AKO, and go back into the account with a CAC login (you do this by pressing the ‘CAC Login’ button), you can change your password for 150 days while CAC logged in.

403 Access Forbidden ERROR

If you receive a message at any point that says ‘403 Error – Access Forbidden’, this means you have a corrupt temporary internet file and your temporary internet files need to be deleted. You must close out of all internet browsers once you delete your temporary internet files, then open a new internet browser and manually type in https://www.us.army.mil in the URL line to re-enter AKO. Depending on the internet browser you are using, the method of deleting temporary files can vary. Search your browser’s help files for more information on how to delete your temporary internet files.
